Dive into coding and computational thinking with our VEX IQ Programming Class, where students learn to design, code, and test VEX IQ 2nd Generation robots while working through the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy (CRMA) curriculum.

This course provides a structured sequence of project-based programming activities that build real-world problem-solving and robotics skills, with a focus on:

  • Programming Skills: Learn behavior-based programming in VEXcode IQ (Blocks), creating sequential programs and custom displays on the VEX IQ Brain.
  • Robot Movement: Control the VEX IQ Clawbot drivetrain, turning to headings, and operating the arm and claw to manipulate objects.
  • Digital & Analog Sensing: Use Touch LED, Bumper, Distance, and Optical sensors to build responsive robot behaviors.
  • Core CS Concepts: Practice loops, discrete and continuous decisions, pseudocode, program flow, and modularity (My Blocks with parameters).
  • Capstone Challenge: Decompose an open-ended problem and iterate solutions in the Subterranean Challenge.

Students follow CRMA’s step-by-step lessons with videos, animations, and challenges, mastering skills aligned to standards. Units include Getting Started with VEX IQ, Programming the Brain, Robot Movement, Digital Sensors, Analog Sensors, Loops, Discrete Decisions, Continuous Decisions, and a Capstone project.

Whether beginners or advancing learners, this program equips students to think computationally, solve complex tasks, and apply coding to robotics using VEX IQ 2nd Gen and VEXcode IQ.
