Two-Week Summer Course: Electrical Foundations with Arduino

Join us for an exciting two-week summer camp at Blue Ridge Boost, where students will dive into the fascinating world of robotics and electronics through the "Electrical Foundations with Arduino" curriculum from Carnegie Mellon University's CS-STEM Network! This camp is perfect for middle and high school students eager to explore hands-on STEM concepts while building real-world electricity, circuits, and programming skills.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Week 1: Electrical Basics and Circuitry
      • Understand how circuits work and the fundamentals of electricity.
      • Use tools like multimeters to measure voltage, continuity, and current.
      • Experiment with conductors, insulators, and switches to build simple and complex circuits.
      • Engage in mini-projects like testing wires, creating parallel and series circuits, and assembling a lightbox.
    • Week 2: Microcontrollers, Sensors, and Robotics
      • Learn to control signals using an Arduino microcontroller.
      • Work with binary and analog sensors, such as limit switches and ultrasonic sensors.
      • Explore motor control, relays, and signal programming for robotic applications.
      • Build and program an Autonomous Kicker and design an E-Panel to organize and label wiring for troubleshooting.

    Skills You'll Gain:

    • Identifying and working with electrical components (wires, connectors, motors, sensors).
    • Using hand tools, crimping wires, and assembling circuits.
    • Measuring voltage, current, and continuity with multimeters.
    • Writing basic Arduino programs to control signals and devices.
    • Designing, organizing, and labeling wiring for real-world systems.

    Daily Activities:

    • Interactive lessons on circuits, signals, and sensors.
    • Hands-on projects, including creating wiring harnesses and soldering techniques.
    • Fun challenges like building a motorized fan, testing voltage nodes, and detecting objects using ultrasonic sensors.
    • Collaborative team projects to design and build functional robotic systems.

    Culminating Projects:

    • E-Panel Design: Organize and label wiring like a professional technician.
    • 2-Wheeled Cart or Autonomous Kicker: Build and program your own robot to solve challenges.
    • Final Showcase: Demonstrate your projects to family, friends, and peers at the end of the camp!

    Camp Details:

    • Dates: June 23 to July 3
    • Location: Blue Ridge Boost, 2171 Ivy Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22903
    • Ages: 12–17 (Middle & High School Students)
    • Requirements: No prior experience required! All materials and tools will be provided.
    • Instructors: Certified teachers trained in the Electrical Foundations with Arduino curriculum.

Give your summer a boost at Blue Ridge Boost! Discover the foundations of robotics and electronics, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools, and ignite your passion for STEM fields. By the end of the camp, you'll walk away with the skills and confidence to tackle more advanced projects in the world of robotics and engineering.

Certification Opportunities

  • All participants will receive a Completion Certificate from Blue Ridge Boost at the end of the camp.
  • Campers can also opt to take the CS-STEM Network Student Certification as part of the SMART Robotics Technician Program, endorsed by the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute.
