Micro:bit Programming (Grades 1 and 2)
Class Meeting Schedule: Wednesdays 3:45 - 4:30
Class Size: 1 to 8 students. We maintain a 1:4 instructor-to-student ratio. Additional instructors are added when new students join mid-course to help them catch up.
Total Duration: 2-3 months. Duration depends on the student’s pace and goals, with flexible scheduling.
Session Length: 45 minutes

Course Topics
The lessons have been simplified for younger learners, focusing on interactive, hands-on activities to keep them engaged.
- Introduction to the micro:bit
- Learn what the micro:bit is and how it works.
- Activity: Make the micro:bit display a happy face or a heart using simple code.
- Inputs and Outputs
- Explore how buttons and lights work on the micro:bit.
- Activity: Program the buttons to display different shapes or words.
- Counting with the micro:bit
- Learn how the micro:bit keeps track of numbers.
- Activity: Create a simple step counter.
- Light and Temperature Sensors
- Introduce how the micro:bit can sense light and temperature.
- Activity: Program the micro:bit to show a sun when it’s bright or a snowflake when it’s dark.
- Wires and Circuits
- Experiment with the micro:bit’s pins and basic circuits.
- Activity: Make a simple circuit to light up an LED.
- Midway Challenge
- Use everything learned so far to create a small project.
- Activity: Build a mini game or tool (e.g., a reaction tester).
- Magnetism with the micro:bit
- Learn about the micro:bit’s magnetometer (compass).
- Activity: Program the micro:bit to point north like a compass.
- Making Decisions (Logic)
- Teach the micro:bit to make decisions (e.g., “if this happens, do that”).
- Activity: Create a game where the micro:bit reacts differently to button presses.

- Introduce sound programming with the micro:bit.
- Activity: Create a simple tune or sound effects.
- Data Collection
- Show how the micro:bit can record real-world data.
- Activity: Program the micro:bit to count how many times it’s shaken.
- Earthquake Simulation
- Use sensors to simulate earthquake vibrations.
- Activity: Program the micro:bit to detect movements and display a warning.
- Final Challenge – Build a Smart Home
- Combine all skills to create a “smart home” project.
- Activity: Make the micro:bit control lights or detect temperature changes.
